Sorghum & Scutching Festival

With the mules running the cane mill, the sweet green liquid will be boiled down over an open fire furnance into sweet dark sorghum molasses. Visitors are encouraged to help. Using flax grown in the field garden, volunteers will demonstrate the process of producing flax for spinning into linen thread. First they will use the flax brake and schtching board to remove the outer layer of the flax straw. A hetchel removes what remains to produce flax that can be spun. Flax will then be spun into thread and woven into linen. Music, old time games, apple butter making, and other harvest activities will be part of the day's festival. Soupbeans and corn bread will be available for a small fee. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 12 and under.
